Construction accountants for London builders and subcontractors
A busy order book can still leave a builder short of cash when retention, materials, subcontractor payments and tax fall at different times. VMK can help connect CIS records, project costs, VAT and company or sole-trader accounts so the figures explain each job as well as the annual result.
Contractor and subcontractor responsibilities are different
Tell us whether you pay subcontractors, receive payments with deductions, or do both. We can review verification records, payment and deduction statements, the return process and reconciliation of tax deducted. Employment status must be considered separately; calling someone a subcontractor is not enough to establish the correct treatment.
Check reverse-charge VAT at supply level
The domestic reverse charge is not applied automatically to every building invoice. The supply, VAT and CIS circumstances and the customer's end-user position matter. Retain the relevant declarations with the invoice review and use the current HMRC construction guidance when agreeing the bookkeeping treatment.
Job margins, retention and staged payments
Agree job codes for labour, materials, plant and subcontract costs, with a separate view of retention and overdue stage payments. A forecast should distinguish expected receipts from available cash. Bring commitments for unfinished work so a profitable-looking project is not mistaken for money already available to spend.
Records to prepare for your accounting discussion
- Subcontractor verification and deduction statements
- Sales and purchase invoices with job references
- Contracts, staged-payment schedules and retention balances
- VAT, CIS, payroll and bank records with filing dates
Start with a brief description of your business, its structure, deadlines and the help you need. Fees depend on the agreed work, transaction volumes, staff, complexity and state of the records. Do not send account passwords, client-identifiable records or financial documents in the initial public enquiry.
Discuss construction businesses and CIS subcontractors accounting with VMKQuestions about construction businesses and CIS subcontractors accounts
Can you help if I am both a CIS contractor and subcontractor?
Yes. Explain both activities so VMK can agree the monthly records, return responsibilities and deduction reconciliation required for your business.
Does reverse-charge VAT apply to every construction customer?
No. The relevant supply and customer conditions need review, including whether a valid end-user notification affects the treatment. Keep supporting evidence rather than relying on the customer's job title.
Will CIS deductions always produce a refund?
No. The final position depends on income, allowable costs, tax deducted and other liabilities. Reconciliation establishes the actual position; a refund cannot be promised in advance.
